FAQ’s

Here are some of our most frequently asked questions

How should I mow my lawn?

Frequent mowing helps a lawn resist weeds, insects and disease. Infrequent mowing causes too much grass to be removed at one time. Infrequently mowed grass also produces a lawn that looks thin, spotty or burned. As a general rule, we never cut more than one-third of the length of your grass at a time.

We generally cut grass at 2 ½ – 3 ½ inches because a lawn cut at this height will have a deeper root system and will be more resistant to weeds and disease than shorter cut grass.

Why and how much should I water my lawn?

Wind, temperature, and sunlight all affect the soil moisture and hydration needs of sod. Generally, fresh sod should be watered twice-a-day during its first two weeks in warm, dry, and/or windy conditions. After two weeks, water can be tapered off to once a day. After one month, watering can be reduced to every few days.

Why are Spring and Fall cleanups important?

In the spring, it is important to rake and remove old grass and debris to allow air and nutrients to penetrate into the soil. During the fall, it is important once again to remove leaves and debris from your lawn prior to the start of the winter season. This will prevent excessive compaction and potential winter kill of your lawn.

Why aerate my lawn?

Lawn aeration is the secret weapon in making your lawn healthy. Aeration involves making holes in the lawn either by pushing a rod into it or by “coring”, extracting a plug of soil. By aerating your lawn you provide the following benefits to your lawn and its root system:

Oxygen gets to the roots and the soil allowing it to “breathe”

Organic fertilizers and nutrients get access to the root system
Water is able to better soak the soil and reach the root system
Helps to break up thatch
Tight, compacted soil is loosened up allowing the root system to grow

Why lime my lawn?

In Nova Scotia, we have naturally acidic soils. With the addtion of lime to your property, this will lower the acidity of the soil which enables grass to thrive.

Why fertilize my lawn?

A timely fertilization program for each season is essential. Proper fertilization will feed your lawn and prepare the grass roots for stressful climate conditions.

Why should I consider a landscape renovation?

Landscape renovation is one of the most cost-effective methods of increasing the value of a property. Adding soil and mulch to shrub beds along with pruning and fertilizing shrubbery not only adds to your curb appeal, it will also improve the overall health of your property.

Where do you provide snow removal services?

At this time, snow removal services are offered in the immediate Halifax area. This is to ensure our current customers receive timely and prompt service during snow storms.
